Buddha Walking w/ Umbrella
Sīvali (called Thiwali in Myanmar ရှင်သီဝလိ ) is an "awakened" disciple of Buddha (arhat), who is widely revered among Theravada Buddhists. He is the patron saint of travel and is believed to ward off misfortunes at home such as fire or theft. Sīvali is typically depicted standing upright, carrying a walking staff, fan or umbrella, an alms bowl, and Buddhist meditation beads. Born the son of Queen Suppavasa, Sīvali is believed to have remained in his mother's womb for seven years because of past karma. After a week of labor, his mother gave birth to a boy who could speak immediately. Afterward, Sariputta, the leading disciple of Gautama Buddha, accepted Sīvali into the sangha. Many people in Myanmar believe that he can be invoked through a special chant and that his invisible presence brings them prosperity and happiness.
