Walking Buddha with Umbrella
Sīvali, also known as Thiwali in Myanmar, is an "awakened" disciple of Buddha, known as an arhat, and is widely revered among Theravada Buddhists. He is considered the patron saint of travel and is believed to protect homes from misfortunes such as fire or theft. Sīvali is usually depicted standing upright and carrying a walking staff, a fan or umbrella, an alms bowl, and Buddhist meditation beads. He is said to be the son of Queen Suppavasa and is believed to have stayed in his mother's womb for seven years due to his past karma. After a week of labor, his mother gave birth to a boy who could speak immediately. Following this, Sariputta, the leading disciple of Gautama Buddha, accepted Sīvali into the sangha. Many people in Myanmar believe that he can be summoned through a special chant, and his invisible presence brings them prosperity and happiness.
