Four wood panels from Taiwan, painted in the Chinese Four Seasons Ladies style. Worn together, they span about 36 inches high and 56 inches wide. The shine is a gold lacquer finish—color and gloss on wood, not solid gold and not gold plate.

Chinese painting has long given each season a woman, flowers, and a change of robe. Taiwan studios still produce that set as a wide wall story: hang as one run or split the four if the room is broken.

Paper canvas quartets of the same subject crease and fade. Lacquer on wood keeps a harder gleam and a line you can see from the far side of a dining table.
