White Teppanom Angel, Carved Wood, 60 Inches

A white Teppanom, also spelled Thephanom (เทพนม), stands 60 inches tall in the listing. The figure is a Thai heavenly being, not a Buddha image. The old telling is that these attendants came down when the Buddha reached enlightenment, to honor that moment. In palace halls, at temple doors, and over restaurant entries, they still read as a welcome.

The classic pose is a kneel with both palms pressed in a wai. This page titles the piece standing. Check the two photos for the leg position before you order, so the pose matches the spot you have in mind.

It is carved from solid wood and finished with paint. Small multi-colored and clear mirror pieces are set into the costume and headdress, using the same glass-inlay idea as Thai wood figures, so the surface flashes as light moves.

Care

Dust with a soft, dry cloth. Do not soak it. Water works into wood and can lift the mirror pieces. Keep it indoors, out of long sun, so the white paint does not yellow.
